The Do’s and Don'ts

To meditate is to follow a journey and in the absence of proper meditation tips, the path that you choose may not help you in good practice. Before you begin practicing, it is important to know the do's and don'ts of meditation.

The Don'ts of Meditation

  • Never treat meditation as an obligation or an obsession.
  • It should not be a forced practice.
  • Don’t give up practice mid-way unless you actually need to due to health or any other emergency
  • Don’t meditate at odd hours like after dinner or in the mid afternoon
  • Don’t use negative energy like anger to channelize your meditation practice
  • Don’t fall asleep during meditation
  • Don’t let your mind wander away into other thoughts than that of the core area of focus
  • Don’t keep checking time during meditation practice
  • Don’t start by meditating for long time durations if you are a beginner
  • Don’t meditate in a surrounding, place, or environment where there are too many distractions
  • Don’t meditate in groups if you are a beginner
  • Don’t join a meditation school if it doesn’t have reputation
  • Don’t meditate in a faulty posture or awkward position
  • Don’t worry too much about missing your meditation session on a given day
  • Never meditate in an intoxicated state or when on medicines
  • Don’t start using mantras that you don’t understand during meditation
  • Don’t wear clothes that are uncomfortable and disturb your thought process during meditation.

One of the most important meditation tips is to avoid meditating when you are physically unwell or have been diagnosed with a severe medical problem like schizophrenia.

The Do's of Meditating

  • Identify the meditation technique that you want to follow and then gain knowledge on the technique.
  • Follow the right posture for meditation. This will vary depending on the type of meditation, such as simple meditation or yoga meditation.
  • Use a cushion or a back rest to support your posture if you have a back problem or are unable to sit straight.
  • Start your meditation practice under the guidance of an expert or a skilled guru.
  • Wear comfortable and simple clothes during meditation.
  • Practice meditation in an environment that is peaceful and where there is no external noise.
  • Begin your meditation activity with stretching exercises or any other warm-up exercise.
  • Set a fixed time everyday for meditation.
  • Meditate in the early morning for maximum benefit.
  • One of the important meditation tips is to begin by meditating in short time durations and then increasing it over the period of time.
  • Identify a focus point and then concentrate on it. The area of focus can be an object, a thought, a mantra, a symbol, God, etc.
  • Start with breathing meditation as it is the easiest to practice.
  • Evaluate your progress on a day-to-day basis.
  • Play soft music or meditation music to make your experience pleasant.
  • One of the important meditation tips is to ensure that there is a purpose behind meditating.
